1. Pictures Perfect! Photos of Real People Matter

Notice how many likes this has!

When it comes to understanding what people are drawn to, I can confidently see it’s the lives of other people. Consider reality TV shows. What draws you so much into them? Is it their lavish lives? The expensive cars? The things they say or do? Whatever the truth may be, it’s a fact that people care about the lives of other people.

This isn’t meant to scare you, however, it’s something you must understand if you’re looking for more engagement when it comes to each and every single one of your posts.

If you post a picture of an event coming up, skip out of the animated people and opt in for posting about real people baking, painting, or exercising - simply doing anything!

Give your audience something real to latch onto - especially during times of COVID-19. People miss people - the physical interactions we used to have. Give them something they can use to feel a human connection in a world that has become so digitized. Make the digital world jump off the screen.

2. Understand How to Build a PR Campaign People Will Want to Follow

For this, I had to ask myself, “How can I make a time when people are stuck at home come alive?”

It wasn’t easy, however, with Thanksgiving rolling around the corner, I knew I had to take a holiday so many of us cherish (especially this year) and show how the Polish Student Alliance gives back.

And that’s how I developed the #PoloniaGivesBack (Polonia = Polish America) campaign.

Each week of November, leading up to and during the week of Thanksgiving, I decided to dedicate each week to a theme.

Week 1 (Nov. 8 - Nov. 14): Thankful for Friends

Week 2 (Nov. 15 - Nov. 21): Thankful for Family

Week 3 (Nov. 22 - 28): Thankful for Community

During each week, anyone is able to send Polish Student Alliance a photo that corresponds to the week’s theme. When a person sends in a photo, they automatically get entered into a raffle for a $10 Starbucks Gift Card.

Using #PoloniaGivesBack as the overarching theme, Polish Student Alliance has claimed online territory of a movement that people can follow - encouraging them to find ways to give back to their friends, families, and communities during the month of November and on.

Considering this example, which has proven itself to have a much higher interest rate, according to our insights, we have been able to generate a following that people want to be a part of.

When developing your social media PR campaign, it’s vital to consider who your audience is and what they care about. If you’re a club that celebrates culture, then consider donating to a non-profit that speaks to what your audience cares about.

Once you engage with your audience’s needs, they’ll be sure to follow. I guarantee it.
